Knowledge-sharing is critical to advancing the space and defense community, particularly in highly specialized disciplines such as electromagnetic compatibility and interference (EMC/EMI) testing. This year, Chief Engineer Dr. Jeffrey Viel of Element U.S. Space & Defense was selected to receive the Award for Excellence in Instruction at the 96th Shock & Vibration Symposium.

The Award for Excellence in Instruction was established in 2023 by the Shock & Vibration Exchange (SAVE) to recognize outstanding tutorial and training instructors who contribute to the professional development of engineers, program managers, and technical specialists attending the annual symposium, by presenting a three-hour college level course on a specific topic. Recipients are selected based on participant evaluations, attendee feedback, and the longevity and impact of their instructional offerings. According to the Shock and Vibration Exchange, Dr Viel's tutorial on MIL-STD-461 was the clear winner based on these criteria.

Dr. Viel earned the honor for his highly regarded tutorial on MIL-STD-461 electromagnetic interference (EMI) testing, a topic that remains foundational to ensuring the reliability and mission readiness of naval systems. The standard establishes requirements for controlling electromagnetic emissions and susceptibility, helping verify that electronic equipment can operate effectively without causing or experiencing electromagnetic interference.

As navy and defense platforms continue to incorporate advanced electronics, digital communications, power conversion systems, and autonomous technologies, understanding MIL-STD-461 has become increasingly important. Dr Viel's instruction helps engineers navigate the complexities of EMI compliance testing, interpret test requirements, and apply best practices that support successful qualification programs.

The award was presented during the Awards Luncheon on September 23, 2026 at the 96th Shock & Vibration Symposium in Orlando, FL.

At Element U.S. Space & Defense, Dr. Viel's recognition reflects not only his personal expertise but also the organization's broader commitment to technical excellence and industry leadership. Through testing, engineering support, and professional education, Element U.S. Space & Defense continues to help space and defense organizations understand and meet the demanding environmental and electromagnetic requirements their systems may face when deployed on the field.

Congratulations to Jeffrey Viel on this well-deserved recognition and on his continued contributions to the aerospace and defense engineering community.
